Carlo Ceresa
(San Giovanni Bianco 1609–1679 Bergamo)
Portrait of a sumptuously dressed young lady,
oil on canvas, 112.5 x 89 cm, framed
We are grateful to Prof Ugo Ruggeri, who confirmed the present portrait as Ceresa’s work. A certificate is available.
Carlo Ceresa’s authorship was also already suggested by Prof Alberto Cottino.
Ceresa was the most important portrait painter of his time in Bergamo (cf Ugo Ruggieri: Paolo Ceresa, dipinti e disegni, Bergamo 1979). The present painting bears witness to this: the sitter is presented to the viewer in an uncompromising frontality, and the detailed execution of her physiognomic traits creates a sense of immediacy that suggests Spanish models. The finely executed frock decorated with lace also reveals a Spanish influence. Ceresa worked for the Viennese court as well as for Venetian noble families. He also painted religious and historic subjects that are regarded as an intermediate stage between Giovanni Battista Moroni and Frà Galgario in Lombard painting, and achieved fame thanks to his impressive portraits of the aristocracy of Venice and its terraferma.
